Many fundraisers and rally events are planned in the coming weeks as residents and volunteers gear up for the first-ever Relay For Life at Veteran's Field in Ridgefield Park on June 11 and 12.
Thirty teams with close to 200 participants in total have formed to walk the track for Relay For Life in the Village. currently, the teams have raised close to $15,000, but team captains hope this number increases before June 11.
A Village History Walk led by Ridgefield Park Mayor George Fosdick is planned for may 22. the walk will begin at 10 a.m. at the municipal building and will continue for two to three hours. Team "Braveheart" organized the walk and members encourage walkers to donate $10. Call Karen at 201-440-8416 to reserve a spot.
"The goal of our fundraiser is not only to raise money to help fight cancer, but to help share information on our very special village to long time residents and newcomers. the Village of Ridgefield Park is unique in many respects, and has always come together as a town to support local events," said Joyce Essig, a Relay For Life participant.
Team "Bobby's Kids" was formed by Bob Roberts' children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Roberts passed away from cancer six years ago. His grandchildren and great grandchildren wanted to do something on their own to raise money, so they are setting up a lemonade stand and serving homemade cookies on may 22 at 11 a.m. in front of Dayle's Village Flower Shoppe to support the American Cancer Society.
The "Roxstars" will host a backyard barbeque at 2 p.m. on may 22 at 405 Hudson St. in Hackensack. the cost is $15 per person. following the barbeque, the team is sponsoring Cuts for a Cure at Hair Central, 83 Central Ave., Ridgefield Park. Haircuts cost $15, which will be donated to Relay For Life.
Julie Trivigno Schneeloch, an employee at Hair Central is a member of team Roxstars. she joined the team to memorialize her childhood friend, Roxanne Feller.
"Roxanne passed away of a long and hard battle with cancer. My father is a cancer survivor and my aunt and uncle both lost their lives to cancer, so and I am walking for many. Everyone at Hair Central happily agreed to sponsor a cut-a-thon, as it's a great way to contribute to Relay For Life," Schneeloch said.
The Luck of the Draw Dart Tournament takes place at Ed's Tavern in Saddle Brook may 27.
