i have a small gas grill portable do i have to have lava rocks to cook on it?

1. Are lava rocks used with the Amana SS 4 buner gas grill?
2. Can I use a pot or pan on a portable grill? I am looking for a new camping grill and am not sure what to buy

4. My gas grill burns everything. I have bought two gas grills but my cooking gets burnt before they are cooked .
