Couple charged with stealing grill

TYRONE - A Tyrone couple face charges after state police claim they took their son along when they stole a gas grill.

Ronald D. Gardner, 36, and Tracey L. Gardner, 38, both of 6 W. 15th St., are charged with theft, receiving stolen property, endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors and criminal conspiracy for allegedly taking a $500 Brinkman ProSeries gas grill from a Bellemeade Drive residence in late March.

Ronald Gardner is also charged with criminal solicitation for enlisting the help of two other men because, according to court documents, he had a bad back.

State police contend John K. Updike, 24, of 1254 Cameron Ave., and Rodney L. Carper, 18, of 1909 Hamlin Ave., were with the Gardners when troopers pulled over their pickup truck at the intersection of old Route 220 and the interchange of Interstate 99 in Grazierville.

"Ron [Gardner] has a bad back, so I loaded the grill with Rodney [Carper]," Updike told police when questioned, court documents indicate. Carper, police note, also admitted to helping load the grill into the back of the truck.

Both men were also charged with theft, receiving stolen property, endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors and criminal conspiracy.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, state troopers on patrol spotted Ron Gardner's truck at old Route 220 and Sabbath Rest Road in Antis Township in the early hours of March 28.

Troopers allege they watched the truck that they described as having "junk" in its bed pull down a lane posted with no dumping signs and turn its lights off.

After checking the area, police then went looking for the truck and caught up with it in Grazierville, according to court documents. Troopers noticed there was a new gas grill, along with four wheel ramps used for loading, in the back of the truck and the four suspects, plus the minor, in the cab.

Police allege Gardner told them he found the gas grill "in a pile of junk in Tyrone," but when they asked his wife, she allegedly admitted they took the grill.

"Don't tell my husband I told you this," Tracey Gardner allegedly told police.

1273509506 Five questions to ask ... when shopping for a gas barbecue

That's it -- you've ruined your last steak! Time to banish the barbecue to the landfill. and this time, you're going to really grill the friendly sales representative before shelling out for a new one.

First, though, spend some time online.

ConsumerReports.org (subscription required) has rated more than 40 models, some available only in the United States. Their top picks, based on factors such as heating evenness and convenience of use, include the Weber Genesis E320 and the Char-Broil Red ($899 and $599 respectively at Home Depot).

The websites of barbecue manufacturers provide detailed product information. Check out these Canadian manufacturers' sites:

- Broil King (broilkingbbq.com) and

- Napoleon (napoleongrills.ca).

Your research will also prepare you to spend anywhere from $200 to $1,000 for a quality 'cue.

Now to those questions.

1 How big is the cooking surface? some manufacturers add the warming rack to give a deceptively high number, according to Chuck Shabsove, owner of Capital Appliance & BBQ on Grenfell Crescent near Merivale Road. "It's the primary cooking zone you need to know about," he says. "You can easily cook for eight people on 400 square inches."

2 How easy is it to move? try dragging the floor model around the store, suggests the helpful ehow website, ehow.com/how_16750

_buy-gas-barbecue.html. just remember that it won't roll quite as easily over a deck or patio stones. Check it for safety at the same time: does it tip easily? Are there sharp edges? Is the handle deep enough so you won't burn yourself?

3 How many BTUs of heat does it produce? much like an energy-efficient car, a well-designed barbecue uses less fuel than a poorly designed one to do the same job. The Weber Genesis, says Shabsove, puts out about 42,000 BTUs compared to over 50,000 for some other products.

4 what is the barbecue made of? Don't be fooled by claims of stainless-steel lids and burners. ask if they're solid stainless steel or just contain it. A 300-series stainless steel will outlast a cheaper 400 series, according to Consumer Reports.org. A magnet will usually stick more easily to a lower-quality grill. Cast-iron and cast-brass burners are also good. A porcelain-coated grate will usually chip and rust: Look for stainless steel or cast iron.

5 What's the warranty?

Broil King offers a five-year warranty on its stainless-steel burner, while Weber is 10 years. Cautions Shabsove, "I can't tell you the number of people I've had leaving here frustrated on a Saturday afternoon because they can't get a part for something made in China."

Scrub the grunge and grease from your backyard grill with mr. Clean Magic Eraser Extra Power.

Marketed as 50-per-cent stronger than the original Magic Eraser, the water-activated micro-scrubbers are designed for heavy-duty household jobs, as well as for cleaning the stainless-steel lid and grates on the barbecue and scrubbing dirt buildup off resin lawnchairs, metal patio furniture and vinyl siding.

Cost: available in packages of two or four from $3.99.

BTU stands for British thermal unit and it's a measurement of the amount of heat a gas barbecue outputs in an hour. However, a higher BTU rating doesn't mean the barbecue cooks more evenly or efficiently. in fact, smaller grills can produce higher cooking temperatures with lower BTUs. The size of the grill and how well it holds and distributes the heat all contribute to the BTU rating.

1273225112 Barbecue Master: Grilled Chicken on the Weber Kettle with Nature ...Last night we grilled whole chicken breasts on the Weber Kettle and sauced them with Nature Isle Caribbean Spicy BBQ Sauce. I won the sauce when I responded to a post on Twitter where you can find me listed as cyndiallison.

I often grill the little boneless chicken breasts. Around here, that's fast food. But, we went with the full chicken breasts tonight which take a bit longer. they are still easy to grill though.

First, we rubbed the chicken breasts with a little Garlic Gold olive oil and then sprinkled on some Chef of the Future Cajun Seasoning which I just had added to my OpenSky store. Don't let the "cajun" part put you off. this is just a very flavorful sprinkle season that is healthy and tastes fabulous but not hot.

Then we used the offset trays for the 22.5 inch Weber Kettle. You can get a similar effect by stacking the coals on each side with space in the middle, but it is really convenient to have the charcoal holders.

With larger cuts like the big chicken breasts, we grilled lid on or convection. It is much like baking at home. Vents both top and bottom were wide open for this barbecue grill session.

The total time for large bone in chicken breasts on the Weber with offset heat is around 45 minutes. The temperature should be around 165 degrees F in the thickest part of the chicken, and I like to use a very basic Taylor but accurate pocket thermometer. I do have some fancy probe thermometers that ring when the meat reaches temp, but I find the pocket version to be more convenient.

When the chicken was getting close done, we sauced them with the Nature Isle Caribbean barbecue sauce. The sauce goes on close the end - like the last 15 minutes or so. Otherwise, it burns. You just want the bbq sauce to set and not char and taste burned.

Boy, this chicken turned out pretty! and, it was just as yummy as it looks here. I never PhotoShop my photos. for starters, I don't know how (-:

The Nature Isle Carribbean is a sweet barbecue sauce with lots of flavor but no major heat. It is just a burst of flavor pleasure. The island theme makes sense. I could see sitting on the beach and eating this chicken sauced with Caribbean Spicy.
