Potato salad with barbeque cuts cancer risk
Potatosalad can help cut the cancer risk posed by eating red meat, according to a newAussie research.
FlindersUniversity researchers have confirmed that the starch contained in cold,cooked potatoes can reduce the cancer risk associated with the consumption ofred meat.
Jean Winter, a PhD student at the Flinders Centre for Cancer Prevention ,says the reduction was “significant”.
"You can find this‘resistant starch’ in beans, green bananas, rice, pasta and potato," the Daily Telegraph quoted Winter, assaying.
She added: "Interestingly, there is more of this starch ifyou heat up the pasta or potato and then cool it down again.
"So ifyou are going to eat your barbecue make sure you have a bit of potato salad onthe side."
the starch works by resisting digestion until it reachesthe colon where it is eaten by bacteria.
the process releasesbeneficial molecules called short chain fatty acids.
For the study,Winter fed a red meat diet to a group of mice while another group were given adiet of red meat plus resistant starch.
After four weeks, theircolons were examined for any signs of ‘DNA damage’ - a precursor ofcancer.
Winter said: "We found this starch could significantly lowerthe formation of these markers for DNA damage.
"And also lower thefermentation of the red meat in the colon ... which can produce toxicmetabolites which can also be carcinogenic."

I didn't see Food Inc, but I have pretty modest meat consumption anyway. Two years ago, I was on a consulting project where the manager loved Capital Grille, so we ate there a few times a week. I ended up getting a case of high cholesterol thanks to all my steak eating! I went on a strict no red meat diet, and even now that I'm totally back to normal, I got in the habit so now I prob only eat it once a month or so.
I've also read a lot about how Americans eat WAY more protein than they need, so I remind myself of that anytime I find myself feeling unfulfilled if a meal doesn't contain meat.
RT If one more newly trim person mentions dropping sugar red meat and carbs from diet I'll eat a burger on bagel w side of Swedish Fish. Okay?
Funny, I thought I had kicked my caffeine habit months ago. I was a true junkie . . . six pack (or more) a day of Diet Coke. I was on one of my improved lifestyles kicks and decided it was time to let go of one of the many things I know to be bad for me. The list wasn't as long as it had been in the past . . . red meat, Diet Coke, smoking, loud music, dating, sex, late nights, and compulsive shopping. After much consideration, it seemed the caffeine would be the easiest.
Sweetie, that nip a day will soon restore you to you old ways. I know, I'm seriously thinking it might be easier to give up sex. LOL
