A Fort Smith man told police he needed a ride, so when he saw keys still in a pharmacy delivery car he allegedly broke in and took it for a drive.

5NEWS has the video of the police pursuit that ensued and involved officers from both Fort Smith and Van Buren.

Thomas Lindley is an ex convicted that now faces a new series of charges. A Fort Smith patrol officer clocked him driving 60 miles an hour on Albert Pike on the north side of the city.

"The speed limit is 30 so the speed of the vehicle, and the officer put in his report ran a stop light at Albert Pike and Grand, and that's when he turned around on the vehicle to initiate a stop at that point," Sgt. Daniel Grubbs told 5NEWS.

It turns out the car was stolen from Coleman Pharmacy on Grand. The suspect would later tell officers that he had been at a local tavern and needed a ride. Lindley reportedly told police he spotted the keys inside and broke in. The suspect ignored the officer's flashing lights. The pursuit that started at Albert Pike led to the Midland bridge. That's when Van Buren officers took over. But Lindley simply took Highway 59 along the Arkansas River and doubled back into Fort Smith.

The Van Buren officer stayed a safe distance back even though traffic was light. Lt. Brent Grill says they are aware of public safety and try not to push suspects. Finally, the car took the Kelley Highway exit and pulled over at the Valero gas station directly across the street from the Arkansas State Police. an officer pulled the suspect out, and just as he did, the car started to roll. A quick thinking cop quickly jumped in and put it in park.

Police believe Lindley may have been intoxicated. He's not only charged with driving while under the influence, but with theft, fleeing, driving with a suspended license, and refusing a breath test. The parolee also had an outstanding felony warrant for failure to appear.
