Geek out your BBQ
This is chapter eight from the ExtremeTech book, Geek House, published by Wiley Publishing. the book shows how to make the most of technology in the home, with 10 PC-based hardware hacking projects.
This is, unabashedly, an article for your inner carnivore. we did find nearly 300 hits on Google searching for "smoked vegetables," but that was out of curiosity more than anything. we like smoked barbeque a lot, but to be right, they have to cook on a very low heat for a long time to let the fat render out. we also like the flavor we get by smoking with charcoal logs—an electric smoker just doesn't do the job right.
That combination, long, slow cooking with charcoal, is hard to do well. we keep the smoker at around 225 degrees F, a temperature so low that it's easy for the fire to go out. You can do it if you're willing to tend the fire constantly, but we're not that patient.
Project DescriptionInstead of tending the fire yourself, a small control system can tend it for you, controlling the air flow to maintain a set temperature. You could enhance our design to warn you to add fuel during a very long smoke cycle.
Figure 8-1 shows the smoker we use. It's a slight enhancement of the common horizontal design, hanging a separate firebox on the left of the main smoker. the separate firebox keeps the direct radiant heat from the coals away from the meat, letting the hot smoky air do the cooking. the placement of the firebox lower than the smoker causes the upwards convection flow of the heated air to draw air into the smoker and then up the flue. the air inlet and flue damper are manually adjustable to control airflow and therefore the rate of combustion, which determines the internal smoker temperature. @ Mr. Sheehy: I'd love to hear your process of making good coffee. This is an area in which I could definitely use improvement. I've met several people in recent years that make tremendous coffee but their process is so complicated (i.e. roasting their own beans, using scales for the right amount of beans, thermometers for the water, etc.) that I find it to be overwhelming. Knowing you, I bet you're much more practical. So walk me through your process if you have the time.
the electric smoker is great. It has a little door in the bottom so I can add wood and water without opening it up and releasing the heat. The flavor is incredible. I smoked a couple salmon filets a few months back and Kristi can't go back to how we used to eat it now. I was indeed planning on using a brine for my turkey. What did you use for your Thanksgiving turkey?

hi! we haven't updated the blog in months, so much of the project description is still missing. this will get fixed once it goes live. we've made a gps client for representatives in the field so that they can monitor reported issues or for instance get directions to the closest one and add a status report (including photos at the site). that's the windows mobile app.
Max, I really like all the imagery you used in this journal entry to describe the scene of a delicious cookout. By using olfactory imagery, the words “rich”, “charcoal”, “salty”, and “hickory smoked barbeque sauce”, helps the reader imagine all of the scents trying to be conveyed in your entry. The reader is able to better understand the scene by your choice of words: “thick”, “grey”, “fired”, “wave”, “sizzled”, “searing”, and “red glow”. These visual aids of imagery are useful and vital when describing the barbeque. You did a great job conveying the types of imagery.

Now, considering the definition, kindly, go back over the posts and judge for yourself which of them sound/read angry. Which of them omits key facts and which has lost focus due to emotionalism? Which post has not addressed the original issue as a response to the article?
The article was about the prudence of placing someone back on a board even though, during her most recent tenure, that board had been declared as incompetent, or at the very least, improper in the conduct of its business with respect to Aspen. Is the Board of Selectmen obligated to appoint anyone who applies, or is it allowed to leave seats vacant with the hope that better candidates will apply if they see a true commitment to cleaning out the status quo?
Did Mr. Rosa state, during his campaign, that he was against 40B projects and hyper-growth projects that consume large amounts of resources while affording little to no time to plan on how to pay for or equitability distribute those resources? Did he not say that the town could get by well with a much smaller school? How does that justify with reappointing a member of the ZBA who erroneously voted with several others to approve a ghastly project? Mr. Rosa, during his previous re-appointment opportunity, chose to not approve Pat Flemming, but did vote to retain another member of a board under heavy criticism, again, in contrast with the votes of Mr. Deslaurier and Mr. Lombardo. Is it a stretch to think that Ms. Flemming's having run for a seat on the BOS may have colored that choice; or was the other retained candidate really that much betters? Facts are facts; I've drawn my conclusion, you can draw your own.
Didn't the BTPA find lots of time to flood your website/mailing list, telephone lines with robo-calls, my blog, letters to the editor, and more with bilious commentary against candidates, persons, and all others who supported a larger school for Billerica (because we all know other buildings are in a similar state and at some point children may have to be re-assigned to the new Parker and others?). Didn't they have jobs and other responsibilities then? Your excuse making for them and for Selectman Rosa is astounding.
As to your view of the “main point” of your remarks, the anti-40B petition may have been in your mind, but you neglected to state so in your commentary post – hence, my humorous and sarcastic comment regarding bugs. Your “main point” never made it to the page, clearly demonstrating a reactive approach to what has obviously upset you. Are you for Sargent being placed on the ZBA, even after all of the comments you've made about it needing to be turned over? Or, are you merely defending like-minded politicians (I won't use the word cronies, because there may be legitimate reasons for your supporting them, and because I don't see conspiracies all around me).
Here's another question that comes to mind as I read your post and your position regarding 40B:
40B housing was started as a way of providing affordable housing for those who, otherwise, could not afford to become homeowners because of their level of skill and income, or some other factor. It is a program that takes money from developer’s legitimate profits (and taxpayer's pockets) and redistributes them to people who have no claim on them other than the fact that they are incapable of pulling their share of the American wagon, but still, somehow, without justification, lay claim to the American dream and other people's purses. It is a socialist idea and a socialist program. It confiscates wealth by force (law) from one part and redistributes it (in the form of home ownership) to the undeserving who have no legitimate right to that money. That is the immorality of 40B housing. There is no “Crony Capitalism” [As an aside: why do you use capitals instead of simply bolding the words you want to stand out in emphasis? From a reader's point of view your "Emphasis Added" with not words that stand out is rather confusing].
In a capitalist economy, 40Bs would never occur, because they are immoral in the sense that they take property from one person or group (builders/taxpayers) and give it to another (impoverished people) without them having to earn it (saving for a down payment, working 2 or more jobs, etc. like the rest of us have done). So, in fact, the Massachusetts Legislature's “Crony Capitalism” is in fact anti-capitalism. I'm assuming that you were referring to the entire legislature, or at least a majority of them; otherwise, the use of the word “Legislator” implies that one person is responsible for this mess and I'm sure you don't mean Mr. Greene. Even I see Mr. Green as a friend in the fight against 40B…Senator Donnelly; on the other hand, well that's a fish of a different kettle. Still, I wonder how Mr. Marasco would have voted…but I guess we'll never know.
I agree with your premise that “feet on the pavement” are important in getting signatures, but equally important is getting out the information about how evil and immoral 40B is in the face of the American heritage of a nation built on the recognition of individual rights (that includes developers, by the way, and even politicians) and the idea of each standing on their own two feet or not. In the latter state, those who fail to stand up and fight, or those who cannot stand for some immutable reason such as failing health or age, their fate is left in the hands of others such as family, friends and the voluntary charity of others. People aren't going to change their minds or viewpoints simply because they are asked to sign a petition. They have to be convinced that 40B is an immoral theft of property and an unjust redistribution of that property to other's simply because they are needy. That's not free choice or free will and the program itself was not created with the consent of the governed. None of these arguments have anything to do with the fallacy argument of “crony capitalism”, as I've clearly demonstrated. Capitalism = voluntary; Socialism = force and Vonnegut's world of Harrison Bergeron and his fight with the Handicapper General.
If you agree with the premise that we are out brother's keeper and that we have a moral responsibility to provide home ownership to everyone who can't afford the house on a legitimate market, then, you are in favor of 40B and against the unpunished corruption you see. In that case, your petition should be focused on ending corruption and not 40B housing. However, if you are in favor of capitalism as a moral form of economics and as representative of the founder's vision of equality – an equal chance to succeed as well as an equal chance to fail supplemented by an equal choice to be charitable in individual cases or not, then you are against 40B and view it is an unjust and immoral law.
And while this commentary is directed at your comments, your comments have had little to nothing to do with Ms. Sargent's re-appointment as a controversial nominee to those who view the ZBA as needing change or with the judgment of Messer’s Correnti, Accomando, and your favorite; Mr. Rosa (who comes across, in my mind, as frequently hypocritical).
